Prepare your account
Start with the official Alipay app from your device’s app store. Follow the registration flow shown for your region. Keep your phone number accessible while travelling so you can receive account or bank verification messages.
Enter sensitive information only in the official app. Test My Alipay does not need your login, passport, card details, or payment password.
Review your linked payment method
Follow Alipay’s current card-linking instructions. Read the card status and any verification requests carefully. If the app does not accept your card, use the exact message to guide a conversation with Alipay or your card issuer.
Check that the bank’s app and authentication method work on the phone you will take. A card appearing in your wallet does not prove a payment has been authorized.
Approach the first payment carefully
For any supported test, review the recipient, currency, amount, funding card, and fees inside Alipay before confirming. Cancel if the recipient differs from what you expected. A real donation is money you choose to give away.
A completed payment is evidence about that transaction. Recipient restrictions, merchant support, and later bank decisions can differ. Keep a backup payment method for the trip.
Make a practical backup plan
Save your bank’s official contact details and know how to reach Alipay support from within the app. Take another accepted way to pay. Our checklist helps you review preparation without making a donation.
Alipay setup FAQs
Why is my Alipay SMS verification code not arriving?
We have run into delayed verification texts with several Chinese apps, even before travelling to China. In our experience, a later request has sometimes worked on the second or third attempt. This is a personal observation, not a reliable fix for every account.
Wait for the app’s resend timer before requesting another code. Check the country code and phone number, signal, spam filters and whether your SIM can receive SMS. Alipay’s support notes that network delays and blocked service messages can prevent delivery.
If the code is for a bank-card check, it may go to the phone number held by your bank. Updating your Alipay number does not necessarily update that bank record. Contact the sender’s official support if the code still does not arrive, and never share a verification code with this website.
My card declines every Alipay payment. What should I do?
First check for a pending charge and read the exact decline message. If another supported Visa or Mastercard is available, try a card from a different issuer after resolving any pending payment. These networks are documented options for linking international cards to Alipay; other networks may also be supported.
Check the card’s available balance, online-payment settings and any approval request in your bank’s app. If the problem continues, contact the issuer and ask whether it declined the transaction or requires verification. A personal transfer or donation code can also have different restrictions from a merchant checkout.
Considering a different card?
Wise and Revolut are our two travel-card options to compare. Check the exact card, fees and eligibility for your country, and keep a backup from another issuer.
Referral links: we may receive a reward if you sign up through a Wise or Revolut link. Check the provider’s current offer, fees and eligibility before applying.
